Frequently asked questions

The questions people actually ask. For the whole picture, read how it works; for worked tax examples and multi-bill settlement, read the guides; if your question is not here, ask on the feedback page.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Uploading a receipt, sharing the link and claiming items all work without signing in, and the people you send the link to never need an account.

Signing in with Google is optional and only adds convenience: your payment details are remembered, your past bills are listed in one place, and you can save a group of people you split with often.

The scan got an item or a price wrong. Can I fix it?

Yes, and you should check before sharing. The screen right after scanning is an editable list — change a description, correct a price or quantity, delete a line that was read twice, or add a line the scan missed.

Faded thermal paper, handwritten additions and two-column receipts are the usual culprits. Everything recalculates as you edit.

How are SST and the service charge split?

In proportion to what each person claimed, never divided equally per head. Your item subtotal decides your share of the tax, so claiming a tenth of the food means paying a tenth of the service charge and SST.

The amounts come from the receipt itself rather than from an assumed rate, because Malaysian receipts differ in rounding and in whether SST is charged on top of the service charge.

What about rice, drinks and things the whole table shared?

Two flags handle it. Mark an item shareable and its cost is divided evenly among everyone who claims it — the fish everyone picked at.

Mark it split equally and it is charged to every diner using the headcount you set, regardless of who tapped it. That is the right behaviour for rice, bottled water and the towel charge.

Who can see my bill link?

Anyone who has the link. It is a private capability URL: it is not listed anywhere on the site and search engines are told not to index or crawl it, but there is no password on it either.

Treat it the way you would treat the paper receipt — send it to your table, not to a public channel.

Two of us claimed the same dish. What happens?

The app flags the conflict to the second person instead of quietly charging both of you. You can then decide whether it was actually shared — in which case mark the item shareable and the cost is split between you.

How do people pay me back?

Attach a DuitNow QR image or a Touch 'n Go number to the bill and everyone who claims sees it on their own summary, so they can transfer on the spot.

BillSplitor never handles money. It does not process payments, hold funds or confirm that a transfer happened — it only shows the payer's own details to the people who owe them.

Nobody is claiming their items. Can I chase them?

Re-sharing the same link is always safe. On top of that, if a bill still has unclaimed items about a day after it was created, the app emails the payer one reminder card to forward to the group. It is sent once, not repeatedly.

When every item has been claimed the bill closes by itself and you get a breakdown of who owes what.

We had several receipts, or several people paid. Does that work?

That is what upgrade mode is for. It puts any number of bills into one set behind a single link, each bill keeping its own tax rules and its own currency at a rate you set.

When claiming is done, the settlement engine nets the whole set into the fewest transfers and works out who pays whom. Repayments made along the way can be logged and offset the plan.

Is there a limit to how many people can join one bill?

Forty people per bill. The cap exists so that a stray link cannot be flooded with fake claim rows; re-submitting under a name that already claimed does not count against it.

How long is my data kept?

Bills and their receipt photos are deleted automatically 30 days after they are created, image included, by a sweep that runs daily.

If you signed in, your account data stays until you delete the account, which you can do yourself from your profile page at any time.

Does it cost anything?

No. There is no paid tier and no per-bill fee. The site is run by one developer and paid for by ads on the public pages, plus the occasional tip through the footer.
